I could describe the brunette man, but not the blonde. "You know, that man. Him. What he is." I fully expected her to understand and was bitter that she didn't.

The woman I questioned put her portfolio away as we spoke. One of the pieces was a gorrilla. The poofy 3-dimensional legs added nothing, and were probably hard to keep; she had trouble putting them in the flat case. I was embarrassed by the logistics they introduced. The eyes, however, were something to envy. Realistic, sad little sores stared out of a half-human face. I wanted to make eyes like that.

The next piece startled me."That's my painting. I painted that!"

"I made it, with my own hands," she refuted.

"No, I mean, I painted something just like that. With that background, and a spindly, surreal tree in the corner, leaveless."

But I knew they weren't the same. My background was flat; hers was fluid, dense, and compelling. I stared deeper into the surface, and found no end to its complexity. I tried to memorize it, knowing that I would wake and want to paint it, but the more I looked, the farther into subtle turns I buried myself. As it moved, another corner swallowed me. Decadence.

She just packed it away, like it was no big deal.
