She started to remember her dreams, then, mostly the same ones. She rode her tricycle on a big disk. It looked like a CD, except that it was sloppy and melted. The disk spun faster than she could ride. She kept slipping. She also knew that keeping pace would not have been enough, because everyone else was inside the grooves. The disk provided no method of squeezing into its ruts, where the whole world existed, everyone and everything familiar.
The other dream had her being crushed by an immense weight, maybe a log. It was dark and solid, and almost enveloped her. She started pushing against the log before really falling asleep. Unlike the disk dream, this dream was weirdly satisfying, and left her somewhat tingly, even though she could never quite push the weight off.
It might have begun with the fever and the cartoon hallucination. She sat on the bed, trying to get off, but a black planet circled around and made faces at her. Her mother called for dinner, but this stupid smirking planet would not let her get off the bed.
After that everything was different.
She had dizzy spells in which the ceiling would spin as long as she looked at it. If she stopped looking, she would spin, so she had to watch it, just to keep still. Her left pupil dilated so that only a thin string of iris was visible, and her right pupil closed to a pinhole.
She had been reading the fairy tales, so she recognized the signs. Eyes
are windows, so one of these windows looks onto something strange and
dangerous. Eventually, with just the one eye dilating, and only at night,
she became a wolf-girl. The night-creature's true nature only exhibited
itself at night, in mismatched eyes. One side of the brain was clearly
more powerful than the other, she thought. It was inside her, she thought;
she just had to help it out.
