Everyone looks for signs.
In a set of rectangles hurredly drawn
(or shuffled) they all fell upon
her at once, lag-like, with beauty
and sadness and unbelievable coincidence.
She sees the irony of parsing
someone else's cards.
She is the beekeeper,
she is the mapmaker.
She knows that by now.

Today, she plays the dealer,
Pushing coordinates
normally flat, four-cornered, faded.
What was momentarily historical
could learn to move
along the third axis.

In the reshuffling of the deck
her hands are swift and accurate.
